  1. Absolutely delighted with the fret dress and set up Tom did on my Fender Jaguar bass. There had been a problem with fret buzz/rattle for some time, making an otherwise lovely bass uncomfortable to play.

Others had tried to sort this out and I thought the 'action' was as good as possible but Tom worked his magic and turned it into a dream guitar- I can't put it down now!

    Many thanks, Tom!

It’s noticeably easier to play so as a result I’m enjoying it that much more. 8. I was really happy to find Tom and not go with a local guitar shop. He came to my house and setup my acoustic, talked me through the whole process and the guitar plays like a dream. If I left it in a shop I would never have learned how it is done. Highly recommend Tom for any guitar work, professional and really friendly.

  10. Tom gave new life to my Fender Jazz bass. He fitted a new Gotoh bridge, Lindy Fralin pickups, removed the old S switch configuration, fitted new strings and gave it a good set up. It’s a different instrument now. An absolute beast! All this for a very reasonable price, friendly service and pick up/drop off. Couldn’t recommend Tom more.

  11. Tom is the best luthier we have ever had the chance to work with and he has transformed 8 of our guitars from very poor to incredible state in a day. They play like butter, sound and look amazing. We are pleased that he agreed to setup and repair all our guitars on a regular basis. We strongly recommend his services, he has extensive knowledge of all things guitars, he is a Master Builder of highest caliber.

  13. Tom helped me buy all the parts for my Stratocaster style guitar and then assemble it. Tom was absolutely brilliant throughout, I could not recommend him highly enough. I have ended up with an amazing instrument which plays probably better than the Fenders and Rickenbackers I have. Exactly the right balance between advice and letting me get on with it. And such a nice guy!!!!!

  14. Tom came to my home in Essex and set up a Takamine acoustic that had a very high action. It was really interesting to see how much work goes into a professional setup. Tom explained everything as he went along and it's clear he really enjoys what he does. The Takamine is now very easy to play and it sounds much better too. So, I'm planning to get the same work done on a John Hullah bouzouki and my old Fender F3. And, it's great to talk music with Tom. I'd have no hesitation in recommending him.

  17. Once again great playing guitars!
Tom asswembled a 1956 style relic strat for me and this guitar plays better than any Fender Custom Shop Strat that Ive ever played.

He also setup and carried out fret work to a made from scratch home built Tele. Even my limited skills, the guitar plays better than I ever though it could. I was expecting maybe a few quirks as it being my first build but this thing is a joy to play.

    Great stuff, Thanks

  19. Tom came to my house at a very convenient time for me and set up two of my guitars, both left handed. I had purchased both on the internet, one a standard Fender Stratocaster, the other a Fender CD-100 CE electro-acoustic. Tom vastly improved the action and tone of both and got rid of niggling buzzing. They are now a real joy to play. It was a real pleasure to watch and talk with Tom while he was setting them both up and he was keen to make sure I would get the playability I wanted. He even returned some days later to make minor adjustments for me.
Tom is very knowledgable and skilled, with great experience and full of anecdotes about the guitar world, also giving me invaluable advice about purchasing another guitar to complete my 'set'. He is very personable and offers an excellent service. I would not hesitate to ask him again in the future. Thoroughly recommended.

  20. I bought a second hand Deluxe strat which needed some TLC so I asked Tom if he could provide a full stone and setup service for me. Firstly, Tom is a super nice guy who will talk through every step of the process with you as he does it from his Mobile Workshop. For someone like me who knows nothing of how a guitar is built, it was a real treat. Secondly, my ageing relic of a guitar was returned to me in superb condition - all previous signs of neglect had vanished. My 17 year old previously unloved strat was given a new lease on life and is now the best playing guitar in my collection so I can't thank Tom enough.

Also - he gave me really useful tips on future care, effective stringing methods and also sorted out the intonation on my Les paul - free of charge. Customer service of the highest level.

My guitars wont go anywhere else from now on!

    Many thanks again,

  22. Last week Tom did a full stone and set up for me and cured a few electric gripes on my Blade RH4. I have to say that not only were the results phenomenal - the guitar plays better than it has ever done in the 20 years I've owned it - but it was a pleasure to have him round and chat guitars over a cuppa. He listened to what I wanted and provided a tailored and very professional service.

I'd highly recommend him to you all (and I can be a picky soul!).

  26. Tom recently did a great job sorting out my old Eggle LA Pro II, which sorely needed some TLC. The bridge pickup had gone microphonic and the volume pot was a shambles. Added to which, the trem bar was lost years ago, so I'd only ever played it as a fixed bridge.
Tom sorted everything out, including a stone and full set-up and now she plays and sounds top notch. Great work and at a very fair price.
Added to which, Tom was a true delight to deal with: incredibly knowledgeable and as friendly a chap as you could ever wish to meet.
    I recommend him without hesitation.

  28. I thought I might have made an expensive mistake, purchasing a Fender bass via an Internet only outlet. The guitar was ridiculously noisy and a struggle to play so I called Tom and asked him to take a look. A couple of days later Tom arrived on my doorstep, found the problem and fixed it. He also adjusted the neck and I’m now the proud owner of a very nice bass which sounds fantastic and has a lovely action.

I’m very fussy about who I’ll let work on my guitars but Tom’s work was outstanding and I won’t hesitate to call on him again. Very friendly and extremely knowledgeable, you really couldn’t ask for more.

  30. Had Tom set-up my 14 year old l/h Epiphone Dot and don't have enough good things to say about the service.

Tom is an absolutely great fella to be around, really friendly and builds a good relationship while he's doing his work, this makes telling him what changes you need to make seem like it's not a problem at all, and his attitude is faultless; stressing several times the importance of getting it right. He's also very forthcoming with tips and advice on maintenance.

The work itself was absolutely outstanding; the guitar was a state and is now as though it's brand new. I've now given it a good run-out and it's as perfect as it every has been.

  39. I've just got my Tanglewood acoustic back and it looks, feels and plays really well!
I originally asked Tom to lower the action because it was quite high at first and I was struggling a bit at learning barre chords in particular (fairly new to playing guitar aha). The action is a lot lower now that it has been setup, and there isn't any fret buzz which is great!
Was a bit sceptical at the difference it would make before getting it done, but am now really amazed at how much difference to the ease of playing a quality setup makes!
Brilliant service, would definitely recommend to all interested and is undoubtedly worth the money...

    Many thanks,

  41. Tom goes way above the call of duty to make sure we're happy with our instruments. Our guitars can take a bit of a rough ride on tour and in the studio but thanks to Tom he's undoubtedly extended the life and love of many of our instruments. His opinion is of someone you can trust and not someone in the game looking to make a fast buck out of guitarists. Whether you're a pro, a collector, a hobbyist or a novice - we couldn't recommend his services highly enough.

  42. I have been using Tom’s services for a number of years and can particularly recommend his work on the famously temperamental Stratocaster tremolo systems. His recent work on my J45 and O style resonator has breathed new life into both instruments, which now play even better than before. Tom is always happy to discuss what needs to be done and his work is excellent.

  44. I have had a Jackson DX1 for around 17 years now. Although I have always loved how it played - I had never really been satisfied with the tone or definition of the sound. I therefore decided to embark upon a fairly major set of upgrades for the guitar. Not only did I want all three H/S/S pickups replacing with original Seymour Duncans, but I also wanted the Jackson licensed trem replacing with an original Floyd Rose Pro.

Tom was superb - he undertook all of the work requested without any worries. The guitar was completely rewired, new pickups installed, bridge replaced (including some necessary repairs to the body where it had started to crack over years of use) and a complete clean down and set up.

In all honesty, the guitar now plays better than it ever has - not because of the components we have added together, but mainly because of the work Tom has done to clean, file, and perfect the fretboard. I now have the action super low and there are no dead spots and no buzz wherever you move on the neck.

Tom is a fantastic guy and a pleasure to meet - he clearly loves what he does and he is very good at it. I will be a customer for life now and that's all down to the care and attention Tom pays to both his customers and their instruments.

  45. Well, what can I say about Tom.......
I have a Dean Electro Acoustic "Performer" about £350, and a Burns "Apache" about £1250, both of which I had tinkered with and taken a file to some of the frets.
Having decided that I was not a guitar tech and that the action was still not right, I found Tom and threw the problems of sorting it all out at him.
He amazed me by being happy to travel all the way to Deal in Kent to do the work at my home, which I thought was a great service.
It was a joy to watch him as he gradually transformed both guitars to perfect condition again and undid all the horrible things I had done to them.
The frets were dressed and I was given the opportunity to try the guitars many times throughout the process, finally getting the perfect setup.
I am so happy that I met Tom, he's a really nice guy and has the patience of a saint.
Nothing was too much trouble and I would not hesitate to use his services again.
    Thanks again Tom.
    Regards,
    Terry

  56. I contacted Tom, on recomendation from a fellow guitarist, about a problem with my 1976 Fender Jazz Bass, Tom soon diagnosed the problem over the email.

As I live in Lincolnshire I made arrangements to take the instrument to Tom. On arrival at Tom's workshop I was greeted in a courtious and friendly manner and he soon resolved the problem with the pick-ups, without devaluing the 'original' status of the instrument. He also spent some considerable time setting up and cleaning the guitar, which now looks and plays as it did when it was new.

I would recomend Tom to anyone with a guitar problem, he is a very knowlegeable man, at both repairing and making guitars. I would have no hesitation in using his skills again, despite the long distance to travel to him. Well worth the journey.

  61. Tom is a really inspiring person to be around (and this before we even come to talking about guitars!).
Trustworthy, polite, always goes the extra mile and has a heart of gold that even Neil Young would be proud of.
The guitars used in Electric River regularly take a serious pounding and Tom is the only person we know and trust who is able to give them a proper resurrection from all the blood, sweat & beers in studios or on the road.
He has been an integral part to the sound of our band, and dug us out of many a sticky situation with some of our more temperamental instruments.
We're very blessed to have him behind the scenes, and can not recommend his service enough to all guitarists of all abilities.

  64. I've been playing a Musicman Stingray for about 12 years now, and it's been a good instrument, it sounds and plays ok, but just not that great.

And then I took it to Tom.

And now it's a great instrument! The action has been vastly improved, the instrument plays and stays in tune, the frets are even, the neck is faster, it's like playing a completely different and greatly superior instrument.

Not only is Tom a highly skilled craftsman - the day I was there he was performing major surgery on a Martin D45 that cost more than my car - but he's also friendly, helpful and good company.
I'm delighted to recommend Tom to anyone looking for top quality guitar repairs.

  65. I recently contacted Tom about a neck I had bought off an internet auction site that unfortunately arrived with fairly badly indented/worn frets. As the neck was intended for an ongoing project guitar build I only wanted a fret level and profile, rather than a full setup (although Tom offered great quotes for both options). Tom levelled and dressed the frets perfectly and cleaned and oiled the fretboard so that it looked like new, and turned round the work incredibly quickly with great communication throughout. Would not hesitate to recommend Tom, and will certainly be using him again!

  67. I bought a cherry red Tanglewood 335 copy a beautiful looking guitar, I plugged it in and the sound that I got was out of this world, nothing like a guitar should sound. There was do variation tone wise, the volume control was nil, it didn't matter if you were on number 1 or 10 it was full on.
I asked advise from a number of repair men and was told that I would need new and expensive pickups. But then I found Toms guitars. Well Tom listened to me. sugested a few options, one of witch was to rewind the pickups that were on the guitar, fit push pull tone control pots and Hey Presto I now have a guitar that can have single coil pickups or Humbuckers.
The guitar now plays as good as it looks.
If you have a guitar problem and you need an ear that will listen to what you want your guitar to sound like Tom is your man 100%+

  69. My Takamine acoustic guitar had developed a bridge related buzz and furthermore suffered from a high action and intonation problems. Tom did a fantastic job. The action is superb now, buzzes all gone and the intonation is now spot on. On top of that he dressed the frets and oiled the fretboard. It feels like a totally new guitar. I wish I had taken it to him years ago rather than putting up with an instrunment which was out of shape.

  70. I was looking for a luthier that could be trusted, countless times tried but failed. It was just by chance that I was looking on the net and found "Toms guitars". It was, just another web site until I contacted Tom himself.

My Epiphone had a crack on the neck and the action and playablity was not good. we eventually meet at my house, as he offers that service which gives him the upper hand "he collects and drops it off". We disscussed indepth of all the opptions that was available... The knowledge that this man has, its quite remarkable.
Feeling good, he departed withmy pride and joy !!!! nervous and scared, he Kept me update of aspects and turn this around in less then a week. I got it last night gleming and just ready to be Rocked. A few minor adjustments to my playing style and that was that.

The crack repaired, coil taps fitted, new pots and wireing, new bridge with graphtech saddles and a complete fret dress...Now Let me tell you, it is Superb. A new guitar that has even more "tonal possabilities" the action is the best I have ever played and I have played some very exspensive guitars in my time. I cant thank him enough I will recomend "Tom King" to anyone. I will have him as my guitar tech any time. Thanks Tom. Jules Quinn

In desperate need of an upgrade and a repair, respectively: I handed over my two favourite guitars to Tom- both of them Gibson Les Pauls: a 1998 Studio in black equipped with humbucker-sized P90s, and a 2002 sunburst Standard.

I requested a Bigsby B7 to be installed on the Studio (with a tone cap swapped on the bridge P90 from a .047 to .022), and the neck BurstBucker pickup to be repaired on the Standard (with coil tap push pots to be added to both pickups).

Tom listened carefully to the requests and was willing to accommodate any specifications mentioned.

In addition to this, Tom telephoned regarding the ability of the parts- and only picked up the guitars once the parts were in stock: he also telephoned to ask whether or not I wished to have the existing neck pickup repaired, or if I would prefer a new Gibson ’57 Classic pickup (which was the tone I asked for), and was prepared to perform only the tasks he was asked.

He telephoned me to know when the guitars were completed, and- after dropping them off- let me play both of the guitars to check that the work, and tones, I requested were what I wished for before taking payment.

How about that for customer service?

Not only was I impressed with the first rate service, Tom really knows what he is talking about- and anything is possible when it comes to guitars!

The Bigsby on my Les Paul Studio plays beautifully (and looks amazing!) and is exactly what I was looking for; and the new tone cap has given the P90s are a new, sparkling lease of life. Fantastic!

The repaired neck pickup (and the coil taps) on my Standard open up a plethora of tones, and the guitar is like receiving a brand new one. It is so versatile!

As if that weren’t enough- Tom also adjusted the action on both guitars and buffed out any scrapes and dings that he could on the finish.

I am not easily impressed but this is top class workmanship: many thanks to you Tom- you did a truly great job!

If anybody needs any work done to their guitars, I wholeheartedly recommend giving Tom a ring: trust me, you won’t regret it; and he is a pleasure to speak to as well.

    Cheers Tom,

    Jake

  75. I entrusted my Martin to Tom for a fret dress and setup. It now plays better than it did new, he has cured the dreaded fret buzz but also achieved a lower action. Great service, and very quick turnaround. Highly recommended.

  78. My son Jamie has gone travelling in india for a few months and left me his 1999 epi les paul and fender tele custom to look after. The guitars definitely needed some attention after living in student digs ... so over to Tom to work his magic. Wow, what a result. They both now play like a dream.

  79. He has done it again. I took my Ibby 1570 to Tom to have two new Kent Armstrong pickups fitted. A ‘Rocker’ in the neck and a single coil, dual rail mini humbucker for the middle. I am very happy with the whole range of new sounds I have to play with. As always a superb job with the guitar coming back with the ultra low action I like, absolutely spot on, the trem perfectly balanced and the neck feeling like silk.

    Cheers Tom

  80. Having found toms guitars by chance, I trusted him with my vintage bass which has a lot of sentimental value but was totally unplayerble.
When I picked it up from Tom, he had transformed it beyond belief! It now plays with a true beautiful sound and looks the part too.
I wld highly recommend his work, service and care he takes with attention to detail.

  81. Finding a guitar tech with experience, skill, knowledge and who genuinely treats your guitar/s with as much care as you do are few and far between. With Tom King you get all the above. Tom set up two of my guitars and I can honestly say they have never played better.

  85. I recently bought a guitar from Tom as an ebay auction for an insanely cheap price.
I honestly believe that is not possible to get a better guitar for the money i paid.
the guitar had much heavier strings than i am used to but i think i may have been converted to light 11's as it plays so well.

  86. I first used Tom for the setting up of my acoustic guitar. He has also recently wired in two Kent Armstrong pick ups into a kit-form guitar that I assembled myself and he did the final set-up and finishing touches to make it play well. I have been very pleased with the turn-around time and service and would highly recommend his work.

  87. Excellent customer service and fast turn around!! My Gibson Les Paul had not been serviced for 17 years, lots of fret buzz, collapsing bridge and looking sad. After Tom worked his magic its like playing a new guitar and looks fantastic again. All done within 24 hours and at a great price.

  88. Tom

Many thaks for fixing both the Strat and the BC Rich. They are now both playing so well the Les Paul is gathering dust. The Strat's action is great with no buzzing all the way up to 21st fret. The new pick ups sound brilliant. My son has been divebombing with the wammy bar on the BC Rich and it is staying in tune. Great job.

  90. I had sold my Taylor 110 and replaced it with a new Guild DV6, a better solid wood design. It sounded good but something was missing. After a set up by Tom the instrument now knocks the spots off of my old Taylor. I would avise anyone to invest in a set up. It is a few quid well spent that you won't regret and will give you pleasure for many years!

  97. After a long search I found Tom hiding in Seal. I have an Ibanez 1570 that needed setting up. I had finally found a luthier that was prepared to listen to what I wanted rather than tell me what I needed. I was looking for a fret job and full set up to get an ultra low action for shredding. Tom very patiently over a three sessions setup, then tweaked the guitar and its now perfect. I can recommend Tom without hesitation for his skill, patience, professionalism and for being exceptional value for money. He will be doing all my guitars in future.

  101. I found Tom on a Google search and took a relatively old mid-price guitar to him for a minor repair and a setup as I needed it as a spare. For a very reasonable price it has come out of his workshop as a more playable and better sounding guitar than I could remember it having been for years, if at all, and I'll be using it a lot more. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tom's repair services.

  104. Tom was recommended to me by a friend, who knows guitars, to get some work done on mine. He was fantastic, he phoned me up to talk and walk me through everything he was doing, it was the personal touch that really did it for me because like most musicians your instrument is everything, it really let me know it was in good hands, i have the upmost confidence in Tom, the job he did on my Fender Jazz was fantastic, it sounds incredible and looks amazing! I will definately be returning to him for work on my other guitars. Daniel Mackey (23yr's old, bassist/singer of The Startover).

  106. I had spent month's and month's taking my Les Paul to various local shops. No matter what they had tried it still buzzed, rattled at the action was still high and unplayable.
After all this bad luck, a friend of mind recommended Tom's Guitars to me. I have to say I have had no regrets, I turned up and with in minutes the problem was discovered, I left my guitar with Tom. Two days later and one fret-dress later I received a phone call. I went and collected it, it's fantastic for first time in years I'm actually gigging with it.
Great fast, and friendly service. Thank you Tom. Shall definitely be using this service again.

    Cheers Darren Kirby. Sevenoaks
